GENERIC
BREEDING
It has taken us approximately 15 years to reach the point where we are
today. Most of the breeding programme was a process of trial and error,
even heartbreak. As we were the first private institution to breed White
Lions, we were basically on our own as far as knowledge was concerned.
We started out by purchasing a brown lioness who carried the White Gene.
This gene is a recessive gene and there were no guarantees that we would
ever breed a White Lion. In actual fact, we were told that there would be
less than a 20% chance that we would ever see one.
Today we have a total of 14 White Lions and 160 normal lions. Of these,
quite a few are what we call splits. All this means, is that this is a
normal lion that carries the White Gene. These are as important to us as
the pure White, as they also give birth to White cubs from time to time.
